Published shower tile cost references
Angi's professional project range includes tile, setting materials, and professional installation. Its labor-per-square-foot figure is a separate component reference, not a rate Ramefor multiplies by an entered wall area.

What a tile number may include—and what it may leave out
A tile proposal should state the measured surfaces, tile and trim, setting products, grout, sealant, layout, cuts, substrate preparation, and installation labor. Do not assume that a tile line automatically includes demolition, a new shower pan, waterproofing, plumbing, glass, fixtures, painting, or repairs outside the tiled area.
Retiling over a sound, correctly prepared assembly is a different job from stripping the shower to framing and rebuilding every water-management layer.
Material, shower size, and pattern change more than tile quantity
- Material: ceramic, porcelain, stone, glass, and specialty tile have different product costs, cutting needs, edge details, sealing, and substrate demands.
- Coverage: wall height, ceiling tile, the shower floor, niches, benches, returns, and outside corners all change measured area and detailing.
- Pattern: diagonal layouts, mosaics, borders, matched veining, and small pieces increase layout and cutting work.
- Tile format: large pieces need a flat substrate and careful handling; small mosaics add joints and alignment work.
- Waste and attic stock: the quote should state ordered quantities, pattern waste, breakage allowance, and what remains for future repairs.
Waterproofing and substrate are not finish details
Tile and grout are not the complete water-control system. The proposal should identify the backer or substrate, waterproofing method, seams, corners, penetrations, pan transition, drain connection, and any required testing.
Old tile removal may reveal soft framing, damaged backer, mold, an uneven wall, or a failed pan. Ask how the contractor distinguishes base preparation from concealed-condition work.
Questions to ask before comparing tile quotes
- Are labor and material quantities based on floor area, wall surface area, or a complete defined shower?
- Who supplies tile, trim, setting products, grout, sealant, waterproofing, and replacement pieces?
- Which demolition, disposal, substrate correction, waterproofing, testing, niches, benches, patterns, edges, and sealing are included?
- What tile specification, layout drawing, grout width, finish standard, and movement-joint detail will both quotes follow?
- How will damaged framing, failed waterproofing, plumbing conflicts, or other discoveries be documented and approved?

How Much Does It Cost to Tile a Shower? [2026 Data]
- Source published/updated
- Ramefor verified
How we use it: Ramefor keeps the project range, reported average, upper-end threshold, and labor unit separate and does not treat tile cost as a complete shower remodel.
Scope and limitations
- The project average includes tile, setting materials, and professional installation, while the per-square-foot figure is described as labor only.
- Material, surface area, pattern, tile format, demolition, waterproofing, wall repair, and hidden water damage can change scope.
- The labor range is displayed as an editorial component reference and is never multiplied by an arbitrary user-entered area.
